Calculate the real hourly pay on a fixed-price video edit.
Your project price is visible. The hours inside it are easier to miss.
Include editing, admin, exports, calls and revisions when reviewing a completed job. Use the same scope when comparing an estimate with actual time. Do not count revisions twice.
The calculation
This is a simplified before-tax measure, not net business profit. Include the cash costs and allocated overhead you want modeled. Fixed payment charges belong in cash costs; percentage charges belong in the fee input.
What three extra hours can change
This example is fictional, not a market-rate recommendation or a customer result.
| Project price | USD 750 |
|---|---|
| Percentage fees | 3% = USD 22.50 |
| Cash costs | USD 30 |
| Amount after listed fees and costs | USD 697.50 |
| 12 total hours | USD 58.13 per hour, rounded |
| 15 total hours | USD 46.50 per hour |
The same payment spread across 25% more time produces a 20% lower hourly figure. That does not mean every extra request should be charged: classify it using the actual agreement and distinguish your own corrections from additional client work.
How much extra time fits your target?
At a target of USD 50 per hour, the fictional USD 697.50 allows 13.95 total hours. With 12 hours already planned, that leaves 1.95 hours before the modeled rate falls below the target. A negative result means the original plan is already below target.
Decide what to change before accepting
- Recheck unrealistic time or cost estimates.
- Reduce deliverables or included feedback only if the client agrees.
- Reconsider the quote using your actual workload.
- For new work after approval, agree the additional scope, fee and delivery timing in writing.
None of these calculations sets a market rate or guarantees the client will accept a higher price. They give you a concrete basis for the decision.
